In a significant move that underscores the growing allure of the Saudi Pro League, English striker Ivan Toney is set to join Al Ahli from Brentford for a reported fee of £40 million (approximately $52.5 million). Brentford announced the transfer on Friday, confirming that Toney will sign a three-year contract with the Saudi club.
Toney, 27, has been a standout performer in the Premier League, netting 72 goals and providing 23 assists in 141 appearances over four seasons with Brentford. His impressive record had attracted interest from several top-tier English clubs, including Chelsea, Arsenal, and Manchester United.
“It’s been a pleasure to work with Ivan over the last four years,” said Brentford manager Thomas Frank in a statement. “He has averaged more than one goal every two games, which is an unbelievable number. On the pitch, he has been a fantastic goalscorer, link-up player, and leader. He has pushed the team, the squad, and himself.”
Toney’s move marks another high-profile signing for Al Ahli, who are keen to bolster their squad with international talent. The Saudi Pro League has been making headlines with ambitious acquisitions, aiming to elevate the league’s status on the global stage.
Earlier this year, Toney faced an eight-month suspension by the Football Association (FA) for breaches of betting regulations. The penalty was later eased after he was diagnosed as a gambling addict, allowing him to return to professional football sooner than initially expected.
Al Ahli’s pursuit of talent doesn’t stop with Toney. The club is also reportedly in negotiations with Napoli for Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen. According to Sky Sports, an agreement has been reached on a fee of €80 million (about $88.5 million) plus add-ons. While Osimhen’s agent, Roberto Calenda, indicated that the player prefers to continue his career in Europe, discussions with Al Ahli are ongoing.
Chelsea had shown interest in Osimhen but were unable to meet Napoli’s valuation of the 25-year-old forward. With the transfer window still open, Al Ahli are hopeful of securing his signature to further strengthen their attacking options.
The signings of Toney and potentially Osimhen reflect the Saudi Pro League’s ambition to attract top talent from around the world, signaling a shift in the dynamics of international football transfers.
