Chinese Paralympians Zhang Bian and Wang Rui Prepared to Shine at Paris 2024

Chinese table tennis stars Zhang Bian and Wang Rui are gearing up to represent China at the 2024 Paris Summer Paralympics, each bringing their inspiring stories of perseverance and transformation to the international stage.

Zhang Bian, paralyzed by polio at the age of two, discovered table tennis in 2003. Over the past two decades, she has become a legend in the sport, securing seven Paralympic gold medals. After the Tokyo Games in 2021, Zhang contemplated retirement as younger athletes emerged, posing new challenges. However, stepping away left her feeling empty, and she decided to continue pursuing her passion.

“Many young players said, ‘You have won so many medals. Maybe you can give young people a chance, and let us also chase medals.’ I said, ‘Young players, you can compete, but I want to realize the value of my life,'” Zhang shared, her determination undiminished.

With 21 years of experience, Zhang embodies calmness and composure. She has navigated numerous rule changes in para table tennis, continually adapting and growing stronger. As Paris 2024 approaches, she is resolute in her quest to reach the pinnacle once more.

“I have won three double titles, and to me, this means a lot and has exceeded many people’s dreams. It has become a habit for me to go through it once a year. Looking back, I felt very miserable and tired at that time, but now I think it was nothing,” Zhang reflected.

Wang Rui, a TT7 para-athlete, lost her leg in the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake. Finding new hope and purpose in table tennis, she transformed her life and rose to become a Paralympic champion with China’s national team.

Heading into her third Paralympic Games, Wang is determined to achieve success in the singles event and address past regrets.

“I have some regrets in the table tennis singles events from the last two Paralympics, as I did not get the results I wanted. So I still have the energy to fight hard, and want to make a bigger breakthrough in the singles events,” Wang expressed.

Despite the long preparation cycle for the Paralympics, Wang remains focused and continually adjusts her training.

“During practice, I have been strengthening my basic skills, technique, and tactics. After playing for so many years, I have a growing desire to stand on the podium,” she added.

Both athletes exemplify resilience and dedication, inspiring a new generation of players. As they prepare to compete in Paris, their stories highlight the transformative power of sport and the unyielding spirit of China’s Paralympic team.
