German Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer Retires from International Football

German goalkeeper Manuel Neuer announced his retirement from international football on Wednesday, marking the end of an illustrious career spanning over a decade. The 38-year-old shared his decision in a heartfelt video on Instagram, stating, “Everyone who knows me is aware this was not an easy decision. We have had lots of highs and lows together, with the victory in the 2014 World Cup final against Argentina at the Maracanã obviously my best moment in a Germany shirt.”

Since making his national team debut in June 2009, Neuer earned 124 caps for Germany, keeping 51 clean sheets. He was a stalwart presence between the posts in four FIFA World Cups and four UEFA European Championships from 2010 to 2024.

Asian football fans will fondly remember Neuer’s remarkable performances, particularly during the 2014 World Cup when Germany lifted the championship trophy. His exceptional skills and sportsmanship have inspired many aspiring goalkeepers across Asia.

“As I reflect on my international career, I am proud and grateful to have been able to share the pitch with my teammates and also wear the captain’s armband for six years,” Neuer reflected. “To recover from a serious injury and play for Germany at a home Euros was the crowning glory. I would like to thank the DFB, staff, teammates, and fans for their support through the good times and the bad.”

Neuer’s announcement comes shortly after midfielder Ilkay Gündogan also retired from international duty earlier this week. Their departures mark a significant moment for German football, with fans worldwide, including those in Asia, celebrating their contributions to the sport.

As he turns his full attention to his club career with Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich, supporters from around the globe will continue to follow Neuer’s journey, anticipating more memorable moments from the legendary shot-stopper.
