IOC Member Fok Praises Hong Kong SAR Athletes for Paris 2024 Olympic Success

Athletes from China’s Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) have made a remarkable impact at the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics, securing two gold and two bronze medals as of Friday.

International Olympic Committee (IOC) member Fok Tsun-Ting, also known as Timothy Fok, lauded the athletes for their fighting spirit and expressed gratitude to the Chinese mainland for its support during an interview with CGTN Sports Scene’s Hu Shichen at the China House in Paris.

“Every time I go to the Olympic Games, I go to the China House and it’s like seeing my own home,” Fok shared. “The China House exhibition is amazing. Many sports started in ancient China. I think it makes sense to combine sports and culture in Paris this time.”

Vivian Kong Man Wai clinched the first gold for Hong Kong in the women’s fencing epee individual event. Fellow fencer Edgar Cheung Ka Long added the second gold with his victory in the men’s foil individual final, highlighting the strength of Hong Kong’s fencing talent on the world stage.

“The tireless efforts of Hong Kong athletes have finally brought about this result,” Fok added. “I would like to take this opportunity to thank the General Administration of Sport of China and many mainland organizations for their support of sports development in Hong Kong. Meanwhile, the fighting spirit and hard work of Hong Kong athletes can also serve as a good example to young people.”

Fok’s praise underscores the collaboration between Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland in nurturing athletic excellence. The achievements of Hong Kong’s athletes at Paris 2024 not only bring pride to the region but also inspire future generations to pursue their sporting dreams.
