B-Girl Liu Qingyi Aims to Showcase ‘Chinese Style’ at 2024 Paris Olympics

At just 18 years old, B-Girl Liu Qingyi has rapidly ascended to the forefront of the international breaking scene. As the first breaker from China to secure a medal at an international event during the Outbreak 2022 street dance competition, and clinching the inaugural women’s breaking gold at the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, Liu is now setting her sights on the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics.

“I feel proud,” Liu expressed in a recent interview. “I just want to show some ‘Chinese style’ on the Olympic stage because breaking, maybe this is the first time for it to be at the Olympic Games. Maybe this is the last time. So I will cherish this opportunity.”

Breaking, also known as breakdancing, will make its Olympic debut in Paris, offering athletes like Liu a global platform to showcase their talents. Liu aims to blend traditional Chinese elements with modern breaking techniques, hoping to present a unique performance that reflects her cultural heritage.

“I have so many things to do because my coaches have given me a lot of advice,” she shared. “I need to digest them and transfer them to use by myself. For now, I just want to put some new things and some old stuff together. Then I can find new feelings.”

Liu acknowledges the challenges ahead but remains optimistic. “If I crash, it’s okay. But for the Olympics, I think that’s the final stage,” she said, emphasizing her determination to perfect her routine before the Games.

The breaking events at the Paris Olympics are scheduled from August 9 to 11, 2024. As the date approaches, Liu continues to train intensively, driven by her dream to represent China and introduce “Chinese style” to the world stage.

“Thanks to our country for giving me this opportunity,” Liu said. “Showing myself and showing ‘Chinese style’ on the Olympic stage will be my dream.”
