CMG Announces Exclusive Media Rights and Copyright Protection for 2024 Paris Olympics

China Media Group (CMG) has issued a statement emphasizing its exclusive media rights and announcing stringent copyright protection measures for the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

The 33rd Summer Olympic Games are set to take place in Paris, France, from July 26 to August 11, 2024. In accordance with an agreement between CMG and the International Olympic Committee, CMG holds the exclusive rights for all media coverage and sub-licensing in the Chinese mainland and the Macao Special Administrative Region (MSAR).

As part of its preparations, CMG has authorized several platforms to provide coverage of the Games. Migu, a subsidiary of China Mobile Communications Corporation (CMCC-Migu), will offer live broadcasts, delayed broadcasts, video on demand, and short video content. Additionally, popular video platforms Douyin and Kuaishou, along with internet giant Tencent, will provide video on demand and short video services to audiences.

Television enthusiasts can tune into broadcasts on the Sports Leisure Channel of Beijing Radio and Television Station, the Five-Star Sport News Channel of Shanghai Media Group, and the Guangdong TV Sports Channel (excluding new media platforms). In a unique move, CMG is collaborating with China Film Group Corporation to offer live viewing experiences in select theaters across the nation, bringing the excitement of the Olympics to the big screen.

CMG’s statement underscores that except for these authorized partners, no other organization or individual is permitted to use the audio and video content or related broadcast signals of the Games without prior authorization. This prohibition includes but is not limited to live broadcasts, delayed broadcasts, on-demand services, edited content, animated images, video downloads, and public broadcasts in venues. Unauthorized use is strictly forbidden across all platforms, including television, radio, the Internet, mobile communication networks, IPTV, Internet TV, mobile media TV, application software, and any accounts or mini-programs on these platforms within the Chinese mainland and MSAR.

Furthermore, CMG explicitly prohibits the use of its Olympic programming for unfair competition under the guise of live broadcasts, rebroadcasts, or media cooperation related to the Olympics. This includes any covert marketing activities that exploit Olympic media rights.

To safeguard its exclusive rights, CMG has launched a special copyright protection campaign. The group plans to collaborate with various stakeholders to bolster rights protection efforts. The statement indicates that CMG will take effective legal measures to crack down on any infringements of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games program copyright and will hold relevant entities accountable according to the law.

This move by CMG highlights the growing emphasis on enforcing media rights and intellectual property protection in the digital age, ensuring that audiences receive authentic and authorized coverage of the Olympic Games.
