Former LPGA world number one Feng Shanshan, who secured the women’s bronze medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics, recently expressed her confidence in the new generation of Chinese golfers.
In an interview with CGTN Sports Scene’s Shen Xiang, Feng spoke highly of rising stars Yin Ruoning and Lin Xiyu, who are making significant strides on the international stage.
“I would say that both of them are very competitive,” Feng remarked. “Right now, they are both highly ranked in the world. If they bring their ‘A’ games, I believe they have chances to stand on the podium.”
Feng highlighted the rapid growth of golf in China, noting the increasing number of young players entering the sport.
“It’s totally different compared to when I started playing the game,” she said. “At junior tournaments in China, the kids have to compete just to get a spot.”
“There are so many more of them starting to play golf and getting serious about it. Some want to go to colleges, and others aim to become professional golfers in the future,” Feng added.
She expressed her happiness at these changes and optimism for the future. “I’m very happy to see the changes, and I really think that Chinese are very good at golf. I’m pretty sure in the future there will be more Shanshans, more Ruonings, more Chinese players getting on the LPGA and PGA Tours, maybe representing China, standing on the podium.”
