Alex De Minaur Withdraws from Wimbledon Quarterfinal Against Novak Djokovic Due to Hip Injury

Australia’s Alex De Minaur has been forced to withdraw from his Wimbledon quarterfinal match against second seed Novak Djokovic due to a hip injury. The ninth-seeded De Minaur sustained the injury during his fourth-round victory over Frenchman Arthur Fils on Monday.

“I’m devastated to pull out due to a hip injury, a little tear of the fiber cartilage that is at the end of, or connects to the adductor,” De Minaur said. “I felt a loud crack during the last three points of my match against Fils and got a scan yesterday, and it confirmed this was the injury and with high risk of making it worse if I was to step on court.”

The injury not only ends De Minaur’s run at Wimbledon but also places his participation in the upcoming Paris Summer Olympics in jeopardy. The tennis events at Roland Garros are set to begin on July 27, leaving De Minaur in a race against time to recover.

“I knew the results of the scan yesterday but hoped I would wake up today and feel some sort of miracle,” De Minaur added. “The problem with me going out and playing is one stretch, one slide, one anything can make this injury go from three to six weeks to four months.”

De Minaur, 25, has been enjoying his best season on the ATP Tour, having reached the top 10 and making it to two Grand Slam quarterfinals this year. His withdrawal grants Djokovic a walkover into the Wimbledon semifinals, equaling Roger Federer’s record of 13 appearances at this stage of the tournament.

Djokovic, a seven-time champion at the All England Club, is aiming to match the Swiss maestro’s tally of eight Wimbledon titles. The Serbian will next face 25th seed Lorenzo Musetti of Italy, who prevailed over the USA’s Taylor Fritz in a grueling five-set quarterfinal, winning 3-6, 7-6(5), 6-2, 3-6, 6-1.

With De Minaur’s exit, the competition narrows as Djokovic continues his quest for another Grand Slam title. Tennis enthusiasts around the world will be watching to see if the veteran can achieve yet another milestone in his storied career.
