In a stunning display of tennis prowess, seventh seed Jasmine Paolini blazed past American Emma Navarro 6-2, 6-1 on Tuesday, making history as the first Italian woman to reach the Wimbledon semifinals. The 28-year-old’s victory on Centre Court sets up a thrilling encounter with experienced Croatian Donna Vekic.
Paolini’s dominant performance not only secured her place in the semifinals but also eclipsed the achievements of compatriots Camila Giorgi, Francesca Schiavone, Silvia Farina Elia, and Laura Golarsa, who had previously reached the quarterfinals at the grasscourt Grand Slam in the Open era.
“It’s unbelievable; it’s amazing to get the win on this special court,” a beaming Paolini said after the match. “I’m so happy to be in the semifinal. I don’t know what to say at this moment. It’s a dream to be here in this position. I was watching finals when I was a kid on this court.”
Paolini faced an early challenge as Navarro drew first blood in the third game with a powerful forehand. However, the Italian responded immediately, ramping up the pressure with heavy exchanges from the baseline to pull ahead 5-2 in the first set.
The Italian mixed up her play to outmaneuver her opponent, comfortably winning five straight games to take the first set in swift fashion. Despite Navarro’s attempts to mount a comeback, Paolini staved off multiple break points in the second set.
With unwavering focus, Paolini extended her lead to 5-1, resisting another push from the 23-year-old American. Although she wobbled slightly while serving for the match, a wayward shot from Navarro sealed Paolini’s victory.
“In the semifinals, you have to play tough opponents, and she’s playing amazing,” Paolini said of her upcoming match against Vekic. “I hope to enjoy the next match, to give 100%, and I’m going to fight for every ball. I’m just so grateful to be here another time, in front of you guys.”
Donna Vekic, who earlier ended the fairytale run of New Zealand qualifier Lulu Sun with a 5-7, 6-4, 6-1 victory, awaits Paolini in what promises to be an electrifying semifinal clash.
