Seven-time Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic overcame a challenging start to defeat Australia’s Alexei Popyrin 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6(3), securing his place in the fourth round at the All England Club on Saturday.
Djokovic, in pursuit of a record-extending 25th Grand Slam title, faced an early setback when the unseeded Popyrin took the first set. The Australian displayed impressive form, breaking Djokovic’s serve with a powerful crosscourt forehand and sealing the set with a confident second-serve ace.
“It was another tough match. I didn’t expect anything less than what we experienced on the court today from Alexei,” Djokovic said after the match. “With that serve and powerful forehand, he’s dangerous on any surface.”
The Serbian star quickly regained his composure, leveling the match by taking the second set. The momentum shifted in Djokovic’s favor, and he appeared rejuvenated, especially after the closure of the Centre Court roof due to weather conditions.
The match featured a light-hearted moment when fans erupted upon hearing that England had advanced in the Euro 2024 qualifiers. Djokovic joined in the celebration, mimicking a penalty kick that Popyrin playfully pretended to save, eliciting cheers from the crowd.
After securing the third set, Djokovic faced renewed resistance from Popyrin in the fourth. The Australian fought valiantly, saving three break points to force a tiebreak. However, Djokovic’s experience shone through as he dominated the tiebreak to close out the match.
“I played a good second and third set, and the fourth was anybody’s game,” Djokovic reflected. “He was serving very well. It was very difficult to read his serve. It was just a very challenging match, mentally as well. I’m not allowed to have too many concentration lapses. I think I’ve done well in that regard in one of the best tiebreaks I’ve played this year, that’s for sure.”
Despite concerns over his right knee, which he had surgery on following the French Open, Djokovic assured fans that he is improving with each match. “I’m feeling better and playing better as the tournament progresses,” he said.
Looking ahead, Djokovic will face 15th seed Holger Rune of Denmark, who advanced after a grueling five-set victory over France’s Quentin Halys. The upcoming match promises to be a thrilling encounter between two formidable players.
