Marc Guehi: No Easy Path as England Prepares for Slovakia at Euro 2024
England’s national football team, commonly known as the “Three Lions,” is set to face Slovakia in the Round of 16 at Euro 2024 in Gelsenkirchen, Germany, on Sunday. Despite topping Group C, England has faced continuous criticism since the tournament began, particularly for scoring only two goals in their three group-stage matches.
England secured their place in the knockout stages by defeating Serbia 1-0 in their opening match, followed by two draws against Denmark (1-1) and Slovenia (0-0). While they managed to avoid early encounters with tournament heavyweights like France, Spain, Germany, and Portugal, England’s midfielder Marc Guehi insists that there are no easy opponents in this competition.
“About the draw, I think everyone has seen in this competition that I don’t think there is a favorable side of the draw,” Guehi told reporters. “Every team, every opponent that you come up against is really tough to play against. But I think we just need to remain calm. That’s the environment we set ourselves. We put pressure on ourselves but it is a calm and focused environment and we just need to focus on one thing at a time.”
Guehi has been one of England’s standout performers at Euro 2024, contributing significantly to the team’s strong defensive record of conceding only one goal in three games. His leadership at the back has been instrumental in England’s progression to the knockout stages.
As England prepares to face Slovakia, the team remains focused on taking each game as it comes. The match is anticipated to draw global attention, including from football enthusiasts across Asia, where interest in European football remains high. Fans will be eager to see if England can overcome their critics and continue their journey in the tournament.
