Chinese heavyweight boxer Zhang Zhilei achieved a monumental victory on June 1, delivering a fifth-round knockout against former World Boxing Council (WBC) world heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder in Riyadh. This triumph marks the most significant win of Zhang’s professional career, elevating his status in the global boxing arena.

Reflecting on his journey from amateur to professional boxing, the two-time Olympian shared insights from his past Olympic experiences in Beijing and London during an interview with Sport Scene’s Greg Laffradi.

“The feelings were the same,” Zhang remarked. “Before turning professional, the Olympics were our highest honor. We represented our country and fought for national pride. Even after turning professional, I still represent China whenever I step into the ring. You can see China’s national flag on my boxing shorts, and I tell boxing fans around the world: ‘This is Chinese Power.'”

As China’s Olympic delegation prepares to embark on its journey to Paris for the upcoming Games, Zhang offered words of encouragement: “As a senior Olympian, I want to tell them: relax your mind and do your best to show ‘Chinese Power’ to the world. I hope all of them can achieve good results in Paris.”

Zhang’s victory not only underscores his personal dedication but also shines a spotlight on China’s growing influence in the world of professional boxing. His commitment to showcasing “Chinese Power” resonates with audiences both at home and abroad, inspiring a new generation of athletes.
