Colombia Extends Unbeaten Streak with Victory over Paraguay; Brazil Held by Costa Rica

Houston, USA — Colombia kicked off their Copa America campaign with a thrilling 2-1 victory over Paraguay on Monday night at NRG Stadium, extending their remarkable winning streak to nine matches.

Daniel Muñoz opened the scoring in the 32nd minute, capitalizing on a precise assist from veteran midfielder James Rodríguez. Jefferson Lerma doubled the lead in the 42nd minute, again with Rodríguez providing the crucial pass, showcasing his experience in his 101st international appearance.

Paraguay fought back in the second half, with Julio Enciso narrowing the deficit in the 69th minute. Despite increased pressure, Colombia maintained their composure to secure all three points.

Colombia dominated possession with 66 percent control of the ball and remained unbeaten in 24 games since their 1-0 loss to Argentina in a World Cup qualifier on February 1, 2022. Their impressive record includes 19 wins and five draws.

Head coach Néstor Lorenzo praised his team’s discipline and focus. “The players are very focused,” he said through an interpreter. “They are very humble. They know this is a game-by-game situation. Today we had a tough match, and they prevailed. They know what is the right direction and what to do, and the most important match is the next match.”

The match drew a crowd of 67,059 fans, predominantly Colombian supporters, creating a vibrant atmosphere that energized the players.

In other Group D action, Brazil was held to a draw by Costa Rica, adding intrigue to the group’s standings as teams vie for top spots.

Looking ahead, Colombia will face Costa Rica on Friday in Glendale, Arizona, followed by a highly anticipated match against Brazil on July 2 in Santa Clara, California. Paraguay will conclude their Group D matches against Brazil on Friday in Las Vegas and Costa Rica on July 2 in Austin, Texas.

Colombia, champions in 2001 and semifinalists in 2021, aim to continue their strong performance in this tournament. Paraguay, winners in 1953 and 1979, hope to bounce back after early exits in the last two editions.
