Jannik Sinner clinched his first grass-court title after defeating Hubert Hurkacz in a thrilling final at the Halle Open on Sunday.
The 22-year-old Italian secured a hard-fought victory with two tense tiebreakers, prevailing 7-6(4), 7-6(2) over his Polish opponent.
“I knew I had to serve really well and you play only a couple of really important points throughout the whole set,” Sinner said after the match. “I’m very happy about this tournament because winning for the first time on grass court is a good feeling.”
This triumph marks a significant milestone in Sinner’s career, highlighting his adaptability across different surfaces.
Hurkacz, the world number nine and defending champion in Halle, praised Sinner’s performance. “It’s inspiring what you’ve been doing the last 12 months,” he told Sinner. “Big congrats.”
Both players are now setting their sights on the upcoming Wimbledon Championships, which begin on July 1. Sinner reached the quarterfinals at the All England Club last year, while Hurkacz advanced to the semifinals in 2021.
