Egypt’s Rising Cycling Stars Aim for Glory at Paris 2024 Olympics

Egypt’s national cycling team is poised to make a significant impact at the upcoming 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris. After securing four out of the five Olympic slots reserved for Africa, the team is gearing up to showcase their talent on the world stage.

In recent years, Egypt has invested heavily in developing a state-of-the-art cycling infrastructure and nurturing local talent. Since its inauguration in 2021, the team has benefited from hosting numerous continental and international events in Cairo, providing invaluable exposure and experience against top competitors.

Rising Through the Ranks

Under the guidance of coach Mohamed Ibrahim, the Egyptian cyclists have made remarkable progress. “In the World Junior category, we are advancing significantly,” Ibrahim noted. “Our players are ranked from 5th to 9th, and we are now the fifth-best nation in the world in that age category. We are the Arab Champions and the African Champions, competing fiercely against South Africa, which used to dominate the continent.”

Eyes on the Prize

Nineteen-year-old Shahd Saeed, the new African record holder for the 500-meter sprint event, will make her Olympic debut in Paris. “I am surprised to have qualified,” Saeed admitted. “I didn’t imagine that I would reach this level so quickly. It’s my dream to become an Olympic athlete. I will do my best to perform well in Paris and hope to make my family and country proud.”

Her teammate, Mahmoud Bakr, echoed the team’s confidence and ambition. “We are now capable of challenging top athletes,” Bakr said. “We are still gaining experience, but hopefully, soon we could be standing on a global podium.”

A New Era for Egyptian Cycling

Egypt’s rapid ascent in the cycling world marks a new chapter for the sport in Africa. With their sights set on Paris 2024, the team aims not only to compete but to signal Egypt’s emergence as a formidable force in international cycling.

As the Olympics approach, the nation watches eagerly, supporting these young athletes who aspire to bring home glory and inspire future generations of cyclists.
