Spain kicked off their Euro 2024 Group B campaign in commanding fashion, securing a 3-0 victory over Croatia in Berlin on Saturday.
Captain Álvaro Morata opened the scoring in the 29th minute, finishing a precise pass from Fabián Ruiz. Just three minutes later, Ruiz doubled Spain’s lead after weaving past three Croatian defenders and slotting the ball into the net. The momentum continued as Dani Carvajal volleyed in a cross from 16-year-old sensation Lamine Yamal just before halftime, making Yamal the youngest player to appear at the Euros.
Croatia had an opportunity to reduce the deficit 12 minutes from time when they were awarded a penalty. However, Unai Simón denied Bruno Petković’s spot-kick. Ivan Perišić attempted to capitalize on the rebound, cutting the ball back for Petković to tap in, but the goal was disallowed due to Perišić’s encroachment into the area.
The match concluded with Spain affirming their status as title contenders. Both coaches agreed that the scoreline fairly reflected the dynamics of the game.
