NBA Legend Jerry West, the Inspiration Behind the Logo, Dies at 86

Naismith Basketball Hall of Famer and NBA legend Jerry West has died at the age of 86, the Los Angeles Clippers announced on Wednesday.

“Jerry West was a basketball genius and a defining figure in our league for more than 60 years,” NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said in a statement. “He distinguished himself not only as an NBA champion and an All-Star in all 14 of his playing seasons, but also as a consummate competitor who embraced the biggest moments.”

West was serving as an executive with the Clippers before his passing but was most renowned for his stellar playing career with the Los Angeles Lakers. Known affectionately as “Mr. Clutch,” West carved out a legacy as one of the greatest guards in league history.

He became the only NBA Finals Most Valuable Player (MVP) from a losing team in 1969, a testament to his outstanding performances. West reached the Finals nine times and secured the championship in 1972. His silhouette famously serves as the inspiration for the NBA’s iconic logo, symbolizing his indelible impact on the sport.
