Paris is poised to welcome the world as it gears up to host the 2024 Summer Olympic Games. International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach expressed his confidence in the city’s preparedness during a meeting of the organization’s executive board on Wednesday.
“Paris is not only on track to deliver the first-ever Olympic Games aligned with our Olympic Agenda reforms, but they are ready; they are set,” Bach affirmed, highlighting the city’s commitment to innovation and sustainability.
The upcoming Games, scheduled from July 26 to August 11, will see approximately 10,500 athletes from 206 countries and regions participating in 329 events across 32 sports. In a historic move, the opening ceremony will, for the first time, not be held at the main stadium. Instead, it will unfold along the iconic River Seine in a spectacular floating parade of athletes, promising an unforgettable experience for both participants and spectators.
Bach reminisced about the success of the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, where an open-air ceremony captivated hundreds of thousands of attendees. “We had great emotion there,” he told Eurosport. Inspired by this, Bach discussed replicating the concept with Tony Estanguet, head of the Paris 2024 organizing committee. Although initially met with logistical concerns, the idea gained momentum. “Tony said, ‘I need to first consult security and the authorities, but I think it’s a really good idea,'” Bach recounted.
The innovative plans for the Paris Games reflect a broader vision to make the Olympics more accessible and engaging for global audiences. By embracing unique cultural settings and promoting inclusivity, Paris 2024 aims to set a new standard for future international sporting events.
