FA Prepares for Potential Departure of England Manager Gareth Southgate

The Football Association (FA) has contingency plans in place should England manager Gareth Southgate decide to step down after the UEFA Euro 2024 tournament, according to Chief Executive Mark Bullingham.

Southgate, who has led the Three Lions since 2016, hinted in a recent interview with German newspaper Bild that he “probably won’t be here” if England fails to win the European Championship next summer in Germany.

His current contract with the FA expires in December, and while the association is keen for him to remain in charge through the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Southgate prefers to postpone extension talks until after the Euros.

Speculation had arisen over potential interest from Manchester United in appointing Southgate as a successor to current manager Erik ten Hag. However, the Premier League club confirmed on Tuesday that the Dutchman will continue at Old Trafford next season.

England’s national football team has a significant following across Asia, where football enthusiasts keenly follow European competitions. Southgate’s potential departure could have ripple effects, influencing coaching strategies and player development paradigms that resonate with Asian football federations looking to emulate England’s recent successes.

As England gears up for Euro 2024, supporters worldwide, including those in Asia, will be watching closely to see if Southgate can lead the team to victory, potentially altering his future with the national side.
