China’s women’s volleyball team launched their FIVB Women’s Volleyball Nations League (VNL) campaign with a thrilling 3-1 victory over the Netherlands in south China’s Macao Special Administrative Region on Wednesday. The match was marked by the much-anticipated return of star spiker Zhu Ting, who rejoined the national team after a two-year hiatus.
The Netherlands took an early lead, claiming the first set 25-21. However, China, demonstrating resilience and teamwork, fought back to win the next three sets 25-23, 25-23, and 25-21.
“It’s our first match on this court, and I think we will do better,” said China’s captain Yuan Xinyue after the game. Yuan was instrumental in the victory, contributing a team-high 17 points.
Elles Dambrink of the Netherlands delivered an impressive performance with a match-high 24 points, challenging China’s defense throughout the game.
The highlight of the evening was the return of 29-year-old Zhu Ting, who was called up in the fourth set. Her presence energized the team and thrilled fans eager to see her back on the court.
“We are very happy and welcome ‘Sister Zhu’ back to the team,” said outside hitter Li Yingying. “Her strength is undoubtable, so even though we haven’t played together for a long time and may be a bit unfamiliar with each other, her skills are still there. She is still Zhu Ting!”
China’s victory sets a positive tone for their VNL journey, as they aim to solidify their position as one of the top teams in international women’s volleyball.
