France’s Leonie Periault Secures Gold and Olympic Spot at Yokohama Triathlon

In a remarkable display of endurance and skill, France’s Leonie Periault clinched gold at the Yokohama World Triathlon Championship Series on Saturday. The 29-year-old triathlete crossed the finish line with a time of 1:52:28, a full 36 seconds ahead of the U.S.’s Taylor Knibb, who secured silver. Fellow French athlete Emma Lombardi claimed bronze, finishing 40 seconds behind Periault.

Periault’s victory not only marks the second World Triathlon Championship Series gold of her career but also secures her a coveted spot at the upcoming Paris Olympics. She will be joined by her compatriot, the 22-year-old Lombardi, as they represent France on home soil.

The competition in Yokohama was fierce, with athletes vying not only for podium positions but also for Olympic qualifications. Taylor Knibb, who had already secured her Olympic berth with a top-eight finish at the Paris test event in August last year, showcased her consistent performance by taking second place. American teammates Taylor Spivey and Kirsten Kasper finished fourth and fifth, respectively, with Spivey narrowly missing Olympic qualification.

The Yokohama leg of the World Triathlon Championship Series is a crucial event on the international triathlon calendar, attracting elite athletes from around the globe. This year’s race was particularly significant as competitors sought to earn points and qualifications ahead of the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Periault’s triumph signals her rising prominence in the sport and adds momentum to France’s aspirations in the upcoming Games. “Winning here in Yokohama is incredible,” Periault shared after the race. “It’s a confidence boost as we look forward to competing in front of a home crowd next year.”

The strong performances by athletes from France and the United States highlight the increasing competitiveness of women’s triathlon on the world stage. As the countdown to Paris 2024 continues, fans can expect thrilling races and emerging talents challenging for Olympic glory.
