Marco Reus, the 34-year-old veteran and iconic figure of Borussia Dortmund, will part ways with the club at the end of the 2023-24 season after an illustrious 12-year tenure at the Westfalenstadion, the club announced on Friday.
Reus expressed his sentiments in a heartfelt statement: “I am incredibly grateful and proud for this special time at my club Borussia Dortmund. I spent more than half of my life in this club and enjoyed every day, although there were of course difficult moments.”
As one of the most successful products of Dortmund’s BVB Evonik Football Academy, Reus began his professional journey at Rot Weiss Ahlen before making a name for himself at Borussia Mönchengladbach. His impressive tally of 18 goals and 12 assists during the 2011-12 season caught the attention of top clubs, leading Dortmund to bring him back home in July 2012 for 17.1 million euros (about $18.4 million).
Over the years, Reus became a cornerstone for Dortmund, amassing 168 goals and 128 assists in 424 appearances by Friday. Despite being plagued by multiple major injuries and facing the dominance of Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga, Reus contributed significantly to Dortmund’s successes, including two DFB-Pokal victories and three DFL-Supercup titles.
His departure signals a significant transition for Borussia Dortmund as they prepare for the future beyond one of their most dedicated players.
