Rublev Stuns Alcaraz; Sabalenka Advances at Madrid Open

MADRID, Spain — In a thrilling quarterfinal match at the Madrid Open, Russia’s seventh seed Andrey Rublev upset Spain’s defending champion Carlos Alcaraz on Wednesday. Rublev overcame a set deficit to win 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, ending Alcaraz’s hopes of achieving a historic hat-trick in Madrid.

Alcaraz, the home favorite, started strong but couldn’t maintain his momentum against a resurgent Rublev. The Russian showcased exceptional skill and determination, breaking a personal four-match losing streak and halting Alcaraz’s impressive 14-match winning run.

On the women’s side, reigning champion Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus secured her tenth consecutive victory by defeating Russian teenager Mirra Andreeva. Sabalenka’s straight-sets win propels her into the semifinals, where she will face Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan. Rybakina advanced after a hard-fought battle against compatriot Yulia Putintseva.

This upcoming semifinal marks the ninth meeting between Sabalenka and Rybakina. Sabalenka expressed confidence ahead of the clash, saying, “Every match with Elena is challenging, but I’m prepared to give my best and fight for a spot in the final.”

The Madrid Open continues to deliver high-intensity matches as players compete for one of the most prestigious titles in the tennis calendar. Fans can anticipate more excitement as the tournament approaches its climax.
