Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) has secured its 12th Ligue 1 title with three matches remaining in the 2023–24 season, following AS Monaco’s 3-2 defeat to Olympique Lyonnais at the Parc Olympique Lyonnais on Sunday.

Entering the weekend, PSG held an 11-point lead over second-placed Monaco. On Saturday, PSG was held to a thrilling 3-3 draw by Le Havre at the Parc des Princes, leaving a slim possibility for Monaco to extend the title race. However, Monaco needed a victory against Lyon to keep their hopes alive.

The decisive moment came in the 84th minute when Lyon’s Malick Fofana netted the winning goal, sealing the victory for Lyon and confirming PSG as the champions.

Since being acquired by Qatar Sports Investments in 2011, PSG has dominated French football, winning 10 Ligue 1 titles in the past 13 seasons. This latest triumph extends their record, putting them two titles ahead of Saint-Etienne in the history of French top-flight football.

This season’s victory may also mark the end of an era, as speculation surrounds the future of star forward Kylian Mbappé. If this is indeed his final season with PSG, he leaves behind a remarkable legacy, having significantly contributed to the club’s domestic and international ambitions.

PSG’s consistent success continues to resonate with football fans globally, including in Asia, where the sport’s popularity is ever-growing. The club’s achievements highlight the increasing globalization of football and its impact across continents.
