China Clinches Three Golds at Badminton Asia Championships in Ningbo

Chinese shuttlers concluded the 2024 Badminton Asia Championships in Ningbo, east China’s Zhejiang Province, on Sunday with a triumphant haul of three gold medals, asserting their dominance in the regional tournament.

In an all-Chinese women’s singles final, Wang Zhiyi emerged victorious over Olympic champion Chen Yufei. Wang, 23, ended her eight-match losing streak against the second-seeded Chen with a decisive performance. After a tight 21-19 win in the first set, Wang dominated the second set 21-7 to clinch her second Asian title.

“It’s not easy. I just got my first win against Chen, which gives me a lot of confidence,” Wang said after the match.

Meanwhile, men’s doubles pair Liang Weikeng and Wang Chang secured their first Asian title. The duo defeated Malaysia’s Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin in a thrilling three-set match, closing with a 21-17, 15-21, 21-10 victory.

In mixed doubles, China’s third-seeded pair Feng Yanzhe and Huang Dongping added another gold for the host nation. They mounted a comeback to defeat South Korea’s world champions Seo Seung-jae and Chae Yu-jung 13-21, 21-15, 21-14.

The men’s singles title was claimed by Indonesia’s Jonatan Christie, who overcame China’s Li Shifeng in the final. In women’s doubles, South Korea’s Baek Ha-na and Lee So-hee triumphed over China’s Zhang Shuxian and Zheng Yu to take the gold.

He Bingjiao joined Chen Yufei in qualifying for the Paris Olympics despite her semifinal loss to Wang Zhiyi.

The championships showcased the depth of talent in Asian badminton ahead of the upcoming Paris Olympics, with several athletes confirming their qualification.
