French basketball prodigy Victor Wembanyama has made NBA history, becoming the first rookie in 30 years to score over 40 points and collect 20 rebounds in a single game. The 20-year-old’s remarkable achievement echoes the feats of NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal, who last accomplished this milestone in 1993.

Wembanyama’s stellar performance helped the San Antonio Spurs secure a 130-126 overtime victory against the New York Knicks on Friday. Despite a dazzling 61-point game from Knicks’ All-Star Jalen Brunson, the Spurs held firm, buoyed by their rookie’s dominance on the court.

“I’ve never seen so much greatness before this season,” Wembanyama reflected. “I’ve witnessed so much greatness, and I want to be a part of it. I’ve always wanted to, but now I’m seeing that I’m already able to compete with those guys. I’m not near them yet, but I’m on the right path. I know it, and I’m going to get there one day soon.”

Beyond personal records, Wembanyama emphasized the growth of his young team. “It’s not the goal, but it still shows progression,” he said. His season has been marked by significant milestones, including recording the first 10-block game in over three years and becoming the youngest player to notch a 5×5—achieving at least five points, rebounds, assists, blocks, and steals in one game.

Reflecting on their development, he added, “The Knicks in November was a tough game for us and embodied a lot of our weaknesses that we’ve been able to erase a little bit throughout the season. This is the type of contrast we want to see. We’re a young team. We need to get better every night.”

Jalen Brunson of the Knicks acknowledged Wembanyama’s potential, stating, “He’s going to be one of the greatest players this game has seen.”

Wembanyama’s journey resonates with basketball fans globally, including in Asia, where the NBA enjoys a passionate following. His rapid rise and aspiration to join the ranks of the game’s greats inspire young athletes and enthusiasts across continents.
