Liverpool and Bayern Munich have reportedly ceased their efforts to recruit Bayer Leverkusen’s manager, Xabi Alonso, for their respective managerial positions this summer. According to ESPN on Thursday, Liverpool CEO Michael Edwards has shifted focus away from Alonso, considering Brighton’s Roberto De Zerbi and Sporting CP’s Ruben Amorim as leading candidates to succeed Jürgen Klopp.
Klopp, who is in his ninth season at Anfield, announced last November his intention to step down after the 2023-24 campaign. Since joining the Reds in 2015, Klopp has led the team to significant successes, including their first English top-flight title in the Premier League era, a UEFA Champions League victory, and an FA Cup triumph, among other honors.
Currently, Liverpool sit second in the Premier League table with 64 points, level with league leaders Arsenal, who hold the top spot on goal difference. The Reds have also advanced to the UEFA Europa League quarterfinals, marking another competitive season under Klopp’s guidance.
Bayern Munich’s interest in Alonso, a former player for the club, has also waned as they explore other options for their managerial role. This development leaves Alonso, who has impressed at Leverkusen, to continue building his career in the Bundesliga.
The shifting managerial landscape highlights the strategic decisions top European clubs are making as they plan for the future. With Klopp’s pending departure, Liverpool’s next appointment will be crucial in maintaining their competitive edge both domestically and in European competitions.
