Chen Wanting, the manager who led Jiangsu to victory in the Chinese National Women’s Football Championship in March, believes that the upcoming season of the Chinese Women’s Super League will see fiercer competition.
Appointed as Jiangsu’s manager in 2022, Chen’s initial goal was to prevent the club from relegation. Despite facing numerous challenges—including a lack of sponsorship, absence of foreign players, and a shortage of backup players—she guided Jiangsu to a 1-0 victory over Hainan in the National Championship final on March 8.
“I’m excited about it because it’s our first title,” Chen said in an interview with Xinhua News Agency. “We reached the final last year but couldn’t send all of our starting players due to injuries and national team recruitment. So, we were proud enough of being the runners-up. We are better prepared this time and have a more complete roster. We targeted nothing but the trophy before the final.”
Chen anticipates that the new season will bring tougher challenges as teams strengthen their squads and the level of play increases. “The competitions in the new season of the Chinese Women’s Super League will grow fiercer,” she stated. “Every team is improving, and we must continue to work hard to stay ahead.”
Her leadership and success with Jiangsu highlight the growing prominence of women’s football in China. As the sport gains more attention, expectations are high for an exciting and competitive season ahead.
