Chinese Vice President Han Zheng concluded a three-day visit to Seychelles this week, marking 50 years of diplomatic relations with renewed commitments to deepen economic cooperation and multilateral coordination. The visit comes eight months after both nations elevated ties to a strategic partnership at the 2024 Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Beijing Summit.
Economic Priorities Take Center Stage
Han announced progress on implementing China's zero-tariff policy for 98% of Seychellois exports, effective since May 2026 under Beijing's broader African trade initiative. Both sides agreed to fast-track an economic partnership agreement focused on fisheries, tourism infrastructure, and renewable energy projects.
Infrastructure Milestone Celebrated
The leaders toured the Seychelles Broadcasting and Television Center, a $28 million Chinese-aided facility completed in March 2025. President Patrick Herminie praised the project as "a bridge for cultural understanding" during the anniversary reception attended by 300 dignitaries.
Multilateral Alignment Emphasized
Han reiterated China's commitment to supporting Seychelles' climate resilience programs and maritime security initiatives. Both nations pledged to coordinate positions in international forums, particularly regarding small island developing states' interests.
The visit concluded with agreements to establish direct air cargo routes and a joint working group on blue economy development, signaling concrete steps to implement FOCAC 2024 commitments.
