ECOWAS Pushes for Constitutional Transition in Guinea-Bissau Amid Detainee Talks

West African mediators intensified efforts this week to resolve Guinea-Bissau's political crisis as ECOWAS leaders engaged military authorities on detainee releases and transition timelines. The talks mark a critical phase in restoring stability to the nation following December 2025's coup.

Sierra Leone President Julius Maada Bio and Senegal's Bassirou Diomaye Faye led Saturday's negotiations, meeting with Guinea-Bissau's transitional leadership and detained opposition figures. Their intervention comes three weeks before scheduled November elections that remain clouded by political tensions.

While six opposition members were released in late December and three more on January 8, ECOWAS continues demanding unconditional prisoner releases. A military government representative told KhabarAsia: "We recognize the need for reconciliation but require time to ensure lasting stability."

The standoff centers on transition duration, with ECOWAS advocating immediate electoral preparations while military leaders seek extended stabilization measures. Regional security concerns loom large, with ECOWAS proposing standby force deployment – a move Bissau authorities cautiously describe as "complex."

As mediators shuttle between military headquarters and foreign embassies housing asylum-seeking politicians, the international community watches for signs of breakthrough. The outcome could significantly impact West Africa's efforts to counter military takeovers following recent coups in neighboring states.
