Israel Establishes ‘Yellow Line’ as New Gaza Border Amid Tensions

Israeli military officials have declared a 'yellow line' demarcation as the new operational border within the Gaza Strip, signaling a shift in post-ceasefire security strategy. Army Chief Eyal Zamir announced the measure during a visit to Beit Hanoun and Jabaliya on December 8, 2025, emphasizing its role as a 'forward defensive line' for nearby communities.

The boundary marks areas where Israeli forces maintain presence under terms of the October 10 ceasefire agreement. Zamir stated troops have established operational control over significant Gaza territories and will remain deployed to prevent Hamas from 'reestablishing itself.' Security preparations now include drills for 'surprise attack scenarios' as part of military planning through 2026.

Controversy surrounds the policy's enforcement, with Gaza health authorities reporting over 370 Palestinians killed by Israeli fire since the ceasefire began. The cumulative death toll since the conflict's October 2023 outbreak now stands at 70,360.

While Hamas has released all living hostages and most deceased captives, negotiations continue for the return of Ran Gvili, a police officer killed during earlier hostilities. Zamir called Gvili's repatriation essential to completing Israel's mission.
