Russia Intensifies Strikes on Ukraine’s Energy, Transport Infrastructure

Russian forces launched a massive overnight assault on Ukraine's critical infrastructure, targeting power facilities and railway hubs across eight regions, Ukrainian officials confirmed on December 6, 2025. The attack, involving 653 drones and 51 missiles, disrupted electricity production, forced nuclear plants to reduce output, and left thousands without heat or water as winter deepens.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reported Ukraine's nuclear power plants—providing over half the country's electricity—curtailed operations due to safety concerns. Emergency crews are working to restore services in affected areas, including the southern Odesa region, where port infrastructure temporarily relied on backup generators.

Railway hubs near Kyiv and Chernihiv sustained significant damage, halting suburban train services. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha condemned the strikes as deliberate attacks on civilian infrastructure, urging accelerated international support amid stalled U.S.-mediated peace talks.

Russia's Defense Ministry claimed the strikes targeted military-linked energy and port facilities in retaliation for alleged Ukrainian attacks on civilian sites. The escalation comes as the conflict nears its fourth anniversary, with no diplomatic breakthroughs in sight.
