U.S. and Israel Discuss Next Phase of Gaza Truce: What’s at Stake?

U.S. mediator Jared Kushner and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held critical discussions on Monday regarding the second phase of the Gaza ceasefire, signaling potential shifts in the conflict’s trajectory. The talks focused on sensitive elements of the agreement, including Hamas’ disarmament and Gaza’s post-conflict governance.

Israeli government spokeswoman Shosh Bedrosian confirmed the dialogue addressed both the ongoing first phase—centered on hostage returns—and the contentious second phase. This next stage aims to demilitarize Gaza, remove Hamas from governance, and establish an international stabilization force. Bedrosian emphasized that details are still under negotiation, stating, "The future of Gaza must ensure Hamas cannot regain influence."

Hamas, however, has repeatedly rejected relinquishing its weapons, calling it a "red line." The group’s stance complicates efforts to transition from temporary truce to lasting stability, raising questions about how the proposed international force would operate amid entrenched tensions.

Analysts note that phase two’s success hinges on balancing Israel’s security demands with pragmatic governance solutions for Gaza. The involvement of an international coalition—yet to be defined—adds another layer of complexity to the fragile process.
