The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) held a solemn ceremony on Wednesday to mark the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War. The event, held at the Hong Kong City Hall Memorial Garden, underscored the city's role in preserving historical memory amid global reflections on peace and resilience.
Attendees observed a flag-raising ceremony accompanied by the national anthem, followed by a rifle volley, moments of silence, and wreath-laying rituals. HKSAR Acting Chief Executive Eric Chan led the tribute alongside senior officials, representatives from central government offices in Hong Kong, and members of the People's Liberation Army Hong Kong Garrison. Veterans, youth delegates, and community leaders also participated, highlighting cross-generational remembrance.
The ceremony aligns with a 2014 decision by the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, which designated September 3 as Victory Day. Since then, the HKSAR has hosted annual commemorations to honor the sacrifices of those who contributed to the defeat of fascism and aggression in Asia.
