China Condemns Philippines Over Taiwan Remarks, Reaffirms Sovereignty

China has issued a stern rebuke to the Philippines following remarks by the Philippine leader regarding the Taiwan region, escalating tensions in a dispute rooted in Beijing's unwavering commitment to the one-China principle. The Chinese Foreign Ministry confirmed Friday it had lodged formal protests through diplomatic channels, calling the comments a breach of Manila's prior commitments.

The controversy stems from statements made by the Philippine leader during a visit to India, where he suggested the Philippines would inevitably be drawn into any military conflict across the Taiwan Strait due to geographic proximity and the presence of Filipino workers in Taiwan. “These remarks constitute gross interference in China's internal affairs,” a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson stated, emphasizing that Taiwan has been an inseparable part of Chinese territory since ancient times.

Beijing highlighted Manila's previous written assurances recognizing the one-China policy, including a joint communique signed when diplomatic relations were established. “The Philippines is now backtracking on its solemn commitments, making provocative statements that endanger regional stability,” the spokesperson added, noting such actions violate both international law and ASEAN's founding principles.

Analysts observe the timing coincides with heightened U.S.-China tensions over Taiwan, putting Southeast Asian nations in a delicate position. The spokesperson warned against using “geographic proximity” or “overseas workers” as justification for involvement in cross-strait matters, urging Manila to “refrain from playing with fire” on issues touching China's core interests.

With over 150,000 Filipino workers in Taiwan, the situation presents complex humanitarian and diplomatic challenges. However, China maintains that national reunification remains an internal affair to be resolved peacefully by the Chinese people themselves.
