U.S.-China Talks Gain Momentum, Treasury Secretary Says

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent described recent economic discussions with Chinese officials as increasingly collaborative, signaling a shift toward deeper engagement between the two global powers. Speaking after a two-day meeting in Stockholm, Bessent emphasized that the third round of talks under the China-U.S. economic and trade consultation mechanism built on progress made in prior sessions in Geneva and London.

"We\u2019ve developed great respect and mutual cooperation," Bessent told reporters, adding that the dialogue expanded to cover a broader range of economic and trade issues. He rejected notions of growing friction, stating, "Rather than the talks getting more difficult, I actually think they are getting more engaged."

The Treasury Secretary explicitly dismissed decoupling as a goal, stressing the importance of sustained dialogue. The meetings focused on aligning economic priorities and fostering cooperation, though specific policy agreements were not disclosed.

Analysts suggest the remarks reflect cautious optimism amid ongoing efforts to stabilize bilateral relations. The talks come as global markets watch closely for signals affecting supply chains, technology policies, and cross-border investments.
