China Pledges Support for Cambodia-Thailand Ceasefire Efforts

China has reaffirmed its commitment to mediating peace between Cambodia and Thailand amid ongoing border tensions, with a Foreign Ministry spokesperson vowing Sunday to "actively facilitate talks" between the Southeast Asian neighbors. The announcement comes as sporadic clashes persist despite both nations expressing willingness to de-escalate hostilities following international mediation efforts.

"Maintaining good-neighborliness and mutual trust serves the fundamental interests of both countries and regional stability," the spokesperson stated, emphasizing China’s role as a neutral party. Beijing expressed deep concern over civilian casualties and called for "calm and restraint" to prevent further escalation.

The conflict has drawn attention from ASEAN, of which both Cambodia and Thailand are members. China praised the regional bloc’s intensive mediation efforts while positioning itself as a complementary peace broker. Analysts suggest Beijing’s involvement aligns with its broader strategy to strengthen diplomatic ties in Southeast Asia through conflict resolution.

With cross-border trade and regional security at stake, the situation remains critical for business communities and policymakers monitoring ASEAN’s economic integration progress. Over 50,000 residents have been displaced since tensions reignited last month, according to UN estimates.
