Russia Recognizes Afghan Interim Government, Deepens Ties

Russia has taken a decisive step in Central Asian diplomacy by formally recognizing Afghanistan's interim government led by the Taliban, according to statements from both nations' foreign ministries. This move marks a significant shift in international engagement with Kabul since the Taliban regained control in 2021.

Russian Ambassador to Afghanistan Dmitry Zhirnov presented the official recognition to Acting Foreign Minister Mawlawi Amir Khan Muttaqi during a meeting in Kabul. Zhirnov described the decision as a "historic step" toward enhanced bilateral cooperation, while Muttaqi welcomed it as the start of "mutual respect and constructive engagement."

The diplomatic development follows Russia's April announcement upgrading Afghanistan's representation to ambassadorial level. On July 3, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko accepted credentials from Afghanistan's new ambassador to Moscow, solidifying the normalized relations.

Analysts suggest this recognition could influence other nations reconsidering their stance toward the Taliban administration, particularly as regional security and economic cooperation priorities intensify. The move comes amid ongoing international discussions about Afghanistan's role in counterterrorism efforts and regional connectivity projects.
