Macron Backs Greenland’s Autonomy, Criticizes U.S. Takeover Remarks

French President Emmanuel Macron reaffirmed support for Greenland's autonomy and Denmark's sovereignty during a visit to Nuuk on Sunday, sharply criticizing U.S. assertions about acquiring the Arctic territory as "wrong." His remarks highlight growing geopolitical tensions over the resource-rich region.

Diplomatic Push in the Arctic

Macron condemned past statements by U.S. President Donald Trump, who previously suggested using "military or economic coercion" to gain control of Greenland. "Greenland cannot be bought or taken," Macron declared at a joint press conference with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenlandic leader Jens-Frederik Nielsen.

Symbolic Consulate Opening

France announced plans to open a consulate general in Nuuk, signaling its commitment to Arctic engagement. Macron emphasized cooperation on climate change and economic development, stating: "We can build a better future through cooperation rather than confrontation."

Strategic Implications

The visit comes amid increased U.S. activity in Greenland, including Vice President JD Vance's March tour of the Pituffik Space Base. Analysts suggest Macron's stance reinforces EU unity against perceived external pressures in the Arctic, where melting ice is opening new shipping routes and resource opportunities.
