Iran Slams New U.S. Sanctions Ahead of Critical Nuclear Talks

Iran has sharply criticized the United States for imposing fresh sanctions targeting its construction sector, calling the move "outrageous" and "inhuman" just days before a pivotal fifth round of nuclear negotiations. The escalation highlights deepening tensions as diplomatic efforts to revive the 2015 nuclear deal face renewed uncertainty.

U.S. State Department officials announced Wednesday they had identified 10 materials—including specialized alloys and chemicals—allegedly used by Iran for nuclear or military purposes. The sanctions target entities supplying austenitic nickel-chromium alloy, magnesium ingots, and other dual-use resources, claiming Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps controls construction activities.

"These sanctions are calibrated to deprive Iranians of basic rights—they're crimes against humanity," said Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei via social media platform X. He accused Washington of undermining diplomacy ahead of Friday's talks in Rome, questioning U.S. commitment to resolving the nuclear standoff through dialogue.

The development comes as both nations prepare for indirect negotiations mediated by European partners. Previous rounds since April have focused on reviving the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which collapsed after the U.S. withdrew in 2018. Analysts suggest the timing of new sanctions could harden Tehran's position, though Baghaei confirmed Iran's delegation had arrived in Rome "determined to remain steadfast."

Market observers warn prolonged tensions may impact regional stability and energy markets, while human rights advocates express concern over humanitarian exemptions in U.S. sanctions regimes. The talks are being closely monitored by Asian governments invested in Middle East security and global nonproliferation efforts.
