China Urges U.S. to Avoid South China Sea Escalation via Philippines

China has issued a stern warning to the United States against leveraging Philippine activities to escalate tensions in the South China Sea, emphasizing its commitment to safeguarding sovereignty and regional stability. The Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning addressed concerns on Friday following a social media post by the U.S. ambassador to Manila regarding recent maritime incidents near Tiexian Jiao.

Sovereignty and Provocations

Mao stated that Philippine personnel have repeatedly conducted illegal landings on Tiexian Jiao, part of China's Nansha Qundao island group, violating both Chinese sovereignty and the 2002 Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea. 'China's countermeasures are legitimate, lawful, and beyond reproach,' she asserted, urging Manila to immediately cease its 'provocations and violations.'

U.S. Role Under Scrutiny

The remarks followed a U.S. ambassador's online commentary about Chinese coast guard operations near Philippine fishing vessels. Mao criticized Washington for 'stirring trouble' and undermining peace, calling for restraint: 'The U.S. should respect regional efforts to resolve disputes through dialogue rather than fueling division.'

Broader Implications

Analysts suggest the exchange highlights growing geopolitical friction as China reinforces its maritime claims. The situation raises concerns for international trade routes and energy security, with over $3 trillion in annual shipping passing through the South China Sea. Business leaders and regional governments are closely monitoring developments that could impact supply chains and investment flows.
