UN Chief Urges Restraint Amid India-Pakistan Tensions

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has called for de-escalation between India and Pakistan following a deadly terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir last month, warning that “the world cannot afford a military confrontation” between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.

In a statement issued Tuesday, Guterres condemned the April 22 attack in Pahalgam, which killed 26 civilians and injured dozens. He emphasized the need for diplomatic dialogue to address tensions, urging both sides to “exercise maximum restraint.”

The appeal comes amid heightened regional instability that has drawn global concern. Analysts warn prolonged discord could disrupt trade routes, impact South Asian markets, and strain international security frameworks. Business leaders and investors are closely monitoring developments, with cross-border trade between India and Pakistan already facing disruptions.

For scholars and diaspora communities, the situation underscores ongoing geopolitical challenges in South Asia. Meanwhile, travelers to the region are advised to monitor government advisories due to security risks.
