China Stresses ‘Equality, Mutual Respect’ in U.S. Trade Talks

Beijing—May 8, 2025. China reiterated its stance on trade negotiations with the U.S. during a Foreign Ministry press briefing Wednesday, emphasizing a commitment to dialogue rooted in "equality, mutual respect, and reciprocity." The remarks come amid ongoing tensions over tariff policies introduced by the Trump administration.

"Pressure or coercion in any form will not work on China," stated spokesperson Lin Jian, addressing repeated U.S. calls for renewed talks. "We will resolutely safeguard our legitimate interests while upholding international fairness and justice."

Analysts suggest Beijing\u2019s firm yet open approach reflects its broader strategy to balance economic diplomacy with safeguarding sovereignty. The U.S. has yet to issue an official response.
