DPRK Unveils ‘Kim Jong Un-Style’ Warship Amid Regional Tensions

The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) has launched a domestically built 5,000-tonne multipurpose destroyer, state media KCNA announced on Saturday. Leader Kim Jong Un attended the ceremony in Nampho, declaring the vessel a milestone in what officials termed the 'great Kim Jong Un-style fleet building' initiative.

The warship, named the Choe Hyon-class after a historic anti-Japanese figure, was reportedly constructed within 400 days using 'our own strength and technology.' Equipped with advanced weaponry, it will join the DPRK navy in early 2026, according to Kim.

In his address, Kim emphasized pre-emptive strike capabilities as 'the most convincing war deterrent' amid what he described as a 'very serious' security environment. He criticized the U.S. and South Korea for deploying strategic assets like B-1B bombers during recent joint drills.

The launch comes as regional tensions escalate, with Seoul's defense ministry confirming increased military coordination with Washington. Analysts suggest the DPRK's emphasis on naval modernization reflects broader strategic priorities in maritime disputes and power projection.

Workers' Party Secretary Jo Chun Ryong praised the project as proof of self-reliance, while Vice-Admiral Pak Kwang Sop framed it as part of a 'new era' for DPRK defense policy.
