Singapore President Dissolves Parliament, Sets May 2025 Election

Singapore's political landscape entered a pivotal phase on April 15 as President Tharman Shanmugaratnam officially dissolved Parliament at 3:00 PM local time, acting on Prime Minister Wong Chok Siong's recommendation. This procedural move sets the stage for a general election to be held on May 3, 2025, with nominations opening on April 23.

The dissolution aligns with Singapore’s electoral framework, which mandates elections within three months of Parliament’s termination. The current unicameral legislature, elected in 2020, comprises 103 members: 92 elected representatives (83 from the ruling People’s Action Party and 9 from the Workers’ Party), 2 opposition-aligned Non-Constituency MPs, and 9 President-appointed Nominated MPs. Speaker Seah Kian Ping oversees proceedings until the transition.

Prime Minister Wong, who assumed office in May 2024, leads a Cabinet blending experience and continuity, including Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Deputy Prime Ministers Gan Kim Yong and Heng Swee Keat. Analysts anticipate heightened scrutiny of economic policies and governance strategies as campaigning begins.
