Lawsuit Alleges Presidential Overreach in Trade Policy
The New Civil Liberties Alliance (NCLA), a conservative legal group, filed a lawsuit on Thursday seeking to block former U.S. President Donald Trump's tariffs on Chinese imports, arguing they overstep executive authority. The case, filed in a Florida federal court, contests tariffs announced this week as well as those authorized in February under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act.
Andrew Morris, senior litigation counsel at NCLA, stated: "President Trump misused emergency powers to impose tariffs Congress did not authorize, threatening constitutional separation of powers." The lawsuit was brought on behalf of Florida-based retailer Simplified, which sells home management products.
Tariffs and Trade Tensions
Trump's latest tariffs reportedly escalate duties on Chinese goods from 20% to 54%, compounding challenges for businesses reliant on cross-Pacific trade. The legal challenge seeks to reverse these measures and halt further implementation.
The White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Analysts suggest the case could reignite debates over executive power and the economic ripple effects of U.S.-China trade policies.
