Israel Steps Up Rafah Offensive, Urges Civilian Evacuation Amid Stalled Ceasefire Talks

The Israeli military has issued urgent evacuation orders for residents of Rafah and surrounding areas in southern Gaza, signaling preparations for an intensified offensive against Hamas. In a statement on Monday, the IDF directed civilians to move to the Al Mawasi humanitarian zone, citing plans for a prolonged operation to dismantle militant infrastructure.

IDF Arabic spokesman Avichay Adraee stated the campaign aims to “eliminate the capabilities of terrorist organizations” in the region. The escalation coincides with stalled negotiations between Israel and Hamas, with Israeli media reporting disagreements over hostage exchange terms. While Hamas reportedly offered a 50-day ceasefire for five hostages, Israel demands 11 hostages and the return of deceased captives' remains.

Palestinian health authorities report over 50,000 casualties since fighting began in October 2023, with recent strikes killing dozens during Eid al-Fitr observances. The renewed violence follows the collapse of a two-month ceasefire in March, which had temporarily reduced hostilities.

Analysts suggest the evacuation orders reflect growing pressure tactics as diplomatic efforts falter. Humanitarian organizations express concern about Al Mawasi's capacity to accommodate displaced families, already strained by months of conflict.
