Poland’s President Urges U.S. Nuclear Deployment to Deter Russia: FT Report

Poland’s President Andrzej Duda has reportedly urged the U.S. to station nuclear warheads on Polish soil as a precaution against escalating tensions with Russia, according to a Thursday Financial Times report. The proposal, discussed during talks with Keith Kellogg, a special envoy representing former U.S. President Donald Trump on Ukraine and Russia, highlights Warsaw’s push for NATO to expand its defense infrastructure eastward.

"The borders of NATO moved east in 1999, so 26 years later there should also be a shift of the NATO infrastructure east. For me, this is obvious," Duda was quoted as saying. He emphasized that deploying such weapons preemptively would enhance Poland’s security amid regional geopolitical uncertainties.

Analysts suggest the request reflects broader concerns within NATO’s eastern flank, where countries bordering Russia seek stronger security guarantees. Poland has significantly ramped up defense spending in recent years, positioning itself as a key U.S. ally in Europe. The White House has yet to publicly respond to the proposal.
