Chinese Ambassador to the U.S. Xie Feng underscored the urgency of stable bilateral relations in a virtual address to the 2025 Duke-UNC China Leadership Summit on Friday, framing peaceful coexistence as a global imperative. “As two major powers, we have an obligation to secure long-term stability,” he said.
Rejecting Rivalry, Embracing Partnership
Xie urged Washington to adopt a constructive view of China, warning that competition-driven policies risk mutual detriment. “Choosing partnership over rivalry creates shared prosperity. The world benefits when we succeed together.”
The Taiwan Question: A Core Priority
The ambassador emphasized adherence to the one-China principle, urging the U.S. to honor commitments under the three China-U.S. Joint Communiqués. He criticized initiatives to strengthen official ties with the Taiwan region, calling attempts to “use Taiwan to contain China” self-defeating.
Economic Interdependence at Stake
With bilateral trade exceeding $680 billion in 2023 and 73,000 U.S. firms operating in China, Xie warned against decoupling efforts and trade wars. “Supply chain disruptions harm everyone—especially those who start them.”
Counternarcotics and Global Leadership
Highlighting China’s 2019 classification of fentanyl-related substances as controlled items, Xie advocated cooperative solutions over tariff-based coercion. He further called for joint leadership in addressing global challenges, rejecting “hegemonism and protectionism” amid rising geopolitical tensions.
