Russia Voices Concerns Over Greenland’s Increased Militarization

Russia has expressed significant concerns regarding the potential further militarization of Greenland, citing threats to its national security. Artem Studennikov, director of the First European Department at the Russian Foreign Ministry, conveyed that Russia is closely monitoring developments in Greenland and firmly opposes any initiatives that could introduce confrontation into the Arctic region.

\"Russia does not accept the introduction of confrontational approaches to the Arctic and is interested in preserving it as a zone of stability and predictability,\" Studennikov stated. He emphasized Russia's consistent advocacy for the construction of a reliable international security mechanism in the area.

Studennikov also highlighted that the future of Greenland should be determined by the Greenlandic people without any external interference, underlining the importance of self-determination for the island's residents.

In related developments, U.S. President Donald Trump reiterated the United States' interest in Greenland both before and after taking office for his second term. Responding to these remarks, Greenland's Prime Minister Mute Egede firmly stated in December 2024 that the island is not for sale and never will be.

Greenland, the world's largest island with a population of around 60,000, transitioned from a Danish colony to an integral part of Denmark in 1953, granting Greenlanders Danish citizenship. In 1979, Greenland achieved home rule, allowing for greater self-governance while Denmark retained authority over foreign and defense policies.
